If you are booking a ferry in the Galapagos, the most important thing to know is this: luggage is allowed on our ferries.

For most travelers, the usual reference point is one suitcase up to 21 kg plus a small carry-on or backpack. If you bring extra luggage or special equipment, that can be handled at the pier and may involve an additional charge, depending on availability.

The short version

You do not need to travel ultra-light to take the ferry.

Most passengers are completely fine with one normal suitcase and one small bag. The weight reference matters, but the bigger point is simply to be realistic and mention special luggage in advance if your setup is outside the usual travel bag.

What luggage is usually fine on the ferry

For a normal island-hopping trip, the standard luggage setup is straightforward:

  • one regular suitcase
  • one small carry-on or backpack

That covers the vast majority of travelers. You do not need to overthink it if you are bringing ordinary travel luggage.

When to mention extra or special luggage

If you are carrying something outside the usual travel setup, it is better to mention it before ferry day instead of hoping it gets sorted at the last second.

That includes things like:

  • more than the normal luggage allowance
  • oversized bags
  • surfboards or special equipment

That does not automatically mean you cannot travel with it. It just means the final handling and any extra charge are usually sorted at the pier and depend on availability.

ABG biosecurity checks take time too

A lot of travelers mix up ferry luggage rules with the separate biosecurity checks for entering Galapagos. The ferry itself allows normal luggage, but if you are arriving from mainland Ecuador first, the Agencia de Bioseguridad para Galápagos (ABG) also checks passenger luggage under the islands’ biosecurity rules.

ABG now uses a digital declaration process, and passengers can complete the declaration up to 48 hours before travel. The official form asks whether you are transporting food, whether you have been in places with animal concentration, and whether you are carrying camping equipment.

ABG also keeps lists of permitted, restricted, and not permitted products because the goal is to stop pests, seeds, insects, animal products, and other risky materials from entering the islands. In practice, that means your bags may be reviewed by x-ray and sometimes physically inspected as part of the arrival process.

That is one more reason I tell people not to cut timing too fine on travel day. The inspection is normal, but it can take time.

A local note from Jenny

Hey, I’m Jenny. I was born in the Galapagos Islands, and when people ask me about luggage, my answer is usually much calmer than they expect.

You are allowed to travel with luggage on our ferries. Most people are totally fine with one suitcase and one small bag. The thing I care about is not making you nervous about every kilo. It is making sure there are no surprises if you are bringing extra or unusual equipment.

And if you are arriving from the mainland, remember that ABG checks are a separate step. They are about biosecurity, not about making ferry travel difficult, but they do take time.

What to keep in your small carry-on

Your small bag is the place for the things you want close to you during the crossing:

  • Passport
  • Phone and charger
  • Water
  • Medication
  • Sunglasses
  • Anything you want before you reach the hotel

If you already know you have extra luggage

My advice would be:

  • do not wait until the last second
  • be ready for the charge to be handled at the pier
  • arrive with enough time so the process stays calm

Remember that our schedule guidance is to be at the pier at least 45 minutes before departure.

FAQ

Can I bring luggage on a Galapagos ferry?

Yes. Normal travel luggage is allowed on our ferries.

What is the usual luggage allowance?

The normal reference is one suitcase up to 21 kg plus a small carry-on or backpack.

What happens if my bag is over the usual allowance?

Extra luggage can be charged at the pier and depends on availability.

Can I bring special equipment like a surfboard?

Usually yes, but it may involve extra handling or an additional charge, so it is better to mention it in advance.

Why does ABG inspect luggage?

ABG inspects passenger luggage to protect Galapagos from invasive species and other biosecurity risks. If you are entering the islands from mainland Ecuador, that process is normal and can add time to your travel day.

Do I need to pack extremely light?

No. Pack sensibly, not fearfully. Most travelers are perfectly fine with a normal suitcase and a small bag.

What should I do next?

If your route is already clear, you can book now. If not, start with the ferry schedules.
